The construction of the new Ballycastle Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland is set to commence this month, with GRAHAM leading the project.

The initiative, jointly funded by the UK government and Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council, represents an investment of more than £16m ($20.1m), aiming to enhance local fitness and recreational amenities.

Located at 13-39 Quay Road, Ballycastle, the new facility will replace a former sports pitch with a leisure centre.

The development includes a 25m swimming pool, a gym, a studio, a splash area with spa features, a bouldering wall, and more, designed to cater to a wide range of community needs.

Scheduled for completion in December 2026, the leisure centre is designed by Irish architect Hall Black Douglas, with a sustainable design.

It aims to achieve net-zero operational carbon and incorporate environmental standards such as Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) and Passivhaus.

The project's commitment to sustainability extends to the generation of renewable energy, with solar photovoltaic panels and a solar carport expected to produce more than 205,000kWh annually.

Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council mayor and councillor Ciarán McQuillan said: “The provision of leisure and recreation facilities is central to the health and well-being of our communities. It has always been our aspiration to deliver a leading leisure centre in Ballycastle for the benefit of those who live there along with the town’s significant visitor population.

“The commencement of this project does indeed mark an exciting milestone for both this project and Ballycastle and we look forward to working with GRAHAM.”

GRAHAM managing director Jonathan Hall said: “The new leisure centre will provide a modern, inclusive space that supports health, well-being, and community engagement. Our focus is on delivering a high-quality build that enhances the local area while aligning with sustainability objectives.”

Last month, GRAHAM was awarded a contract by Surrey County Council to upgrade the A320 road network in England, UK.
