Balfour Beatty has been selected by North Norfolk District Council to deliver two coastal defence contracts, worth £19.5m in total, in Norfolk, England, UK.

The company will deliver the Cromer Phase 2 scheme and the Mundesley Coastal Management scheme.

The two schemes are expected to protect 600 homes and businesses located in the communities of Cromer and Mundesley from flooding and coastal erosion.

Under the Cromer Phase 2 scheme, Balfour will build a new rock armour revetment on the Norfolk coast on the west of Cromer pier. It will involve placing 38,000 tonnes (t) of rock on the shoreline.

Meanwhile, as part of the Mundesley Coastal Management scheme, Balfour will place 36,000t of rock on the shoreline.

The company will also complete remedial works to the existing sea walls and renovate the groynes - perpendicular structures that manage sediment flow.

Balfour UK Construction Regional Civils managing director Peter Mumford said: "Balfour Beatty has been successfully delivering coastal protection and flood defence schemes for over 25 years, most recently having been appointed to deliver two projects on behalf of Denbighshire County Council.”

Balfour plans to commence work on the two schemes soon and expects to complete the tasks in early 2025.

The schemes have been awarded through the SCAPE Civil Engineering framework, a rapid access framework aimed to increase efficiency, collaboration, time, and cost savings.

SCAPE Group CEO Mark Robinson said: “These two key protection schemes will help to safeguard Cromer and Mundesley, whilst futureproofing their defences against more extreme weather.

“Using our civil engineering framework will allow North Norfolk District Council to maximise the speed and efficiency of delivery, and create a positive, sustainable legacy - unlocking value through social impact, the use of local businesses and the creation of training and employment opportunities.”

The two schemes are expected to create approximately 50 jobs during their peak construction phases.

Earlier this year, Balfour was appointed for two coastal defence schemes on behalf of Denbighshire County Council in Wales, UK.
