Balfour Beatty has secured a £192m ($243.5m) contract to construct three new substations in Argyll, Scotland, for Scottish & Southern Electricity Network (SSEN) Transmission.

The project, awarded through the GIS2 RIIO T2 framework, leverages the company's expertise in power transmission and distribution and its regional presence.

The contract involves the design and build of three new 275kV substations at Craig Murrail, An Suidhe, and Crarae.

These substations are said to be integral to SSEN Transmission’s strategy for reinforcing the Argyll and Kintyre networks.

Upon completion, they will bolster the region's electrical transmission infrastructure to support the anticipated upsurge in renewable energy generation in the area.

Beatty's track record in energy project delivery in Scotland, including the recent completion of the Peterhead Substation, reportedly played a significant role in its selection.

The company also continues to work on nine schemes under SSEN Transmission’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment framework.

Beatty UK Power Transmission & Distribution managing director Tony Wilson said: “This announcement marks an important milestone in SSEN’s Argyll and Kintyre reinforcement works - a project that is crucial for enhancing substation infrastructure in the region.

“Our expertise in substation delivery, coupled with our local experience, make us the perfect fit to tackle the challenges ahead, deliver the project to the highest of standards and secure the supply of renewable energy to homes and businesses in the region.”

The project's main construction phase is scheduled to commence in mid-2024, with Beatty planning to employ approximately 200 people at the peak of construction.

Last week, Balfour Beatty won a contract for the first phase of the approximately £690m Skye 132kV Reinforcement Project for SSEN Transmission.
