Balfour Beatty has secured a contract worth £27m ($35.40m) to implement the Comrie flood protection scheme in Scotland, UK.
The contract, awarded by Perth and Kinross Council, will see the construction of flood defences designed to protect the community against a 'one in 200-year flood' event.
The project, facilitated through the SCAPE Civil Engineering Framework, involves the construction of 2.8km of river walls and embankments along the Ruchill River, River Earn, and River Lednock.
The initiative aims to safeguard approximately 200 homes and businesses.
Balfour Beatty Scotland managing director Hector MacAulay said: “We are pleased to have been appointed to this scheme building on our longstanding and successful relationship in delivering flood defence works for Perth and Kinross Council.
“Drawing on our extensive experience and expertise, the scheme will not only better protect properties, businesses and key infrastructure from the risk of flooding but futureproof the town, ensuring it remains protected for generations to come."
Work on the flood protection scheme is set to begin shortly, with a projected completion date in late 2026.
At the peak of construction, the project is expected to provide jobs for approximately 100 individuals, including opportunities for ten apprentices, graduates, and trainees.
In addition, Balfour Beatty's team will engage with the local community by dedicating 50 hours to visiting schools and educating students on the importance of sustainable construction practices, and more.
Balfour Beatty has a record of delivering flood defence projects for Perth and Kinross Council, having completed the Almondbank flood protection scheme in 2018.
This previous project involved constructing various flood defences that now protect more than 150 properties along the River Almond in Almondbank.
Moreover, Balfour Beatty recently celebrated reaching a milestone in the construction of the High Speed Two gateway to Birmingham.
The tunnel boring machine Mary Ann has completed half of the first bore of the Bromford Tunnel excavation.
