Balfour Beatty has secured a £185m ($235.12m) contract to dual a section of the A9 road between Tomatin and Moy in the Scottish Highlands, UK.

Awarded by Transport Scotland, the A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy project is part of A9 Dualling Programme announced in December 2023.

The programme requires dualling 11 sections.

This project is the third section of the programme. It is expected to improve journey times and reliability for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and bus passengers.

The latest contract will upgrade 9.6km of the route from a single to dual carriageway and includes the construction of four major bridges.

By introducing improved active travel routes, Balfour Beatty aims to promote cycling and walking in the area.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to generate economic growth by strengthening transport links between Scotland's Central Belt and its highlands and islands.

In addition, Balfour Beatty is committed to reducing its carbon emissions throughout the construction phase.

The company plans to source local materials to minimise heavy goods vehicle movements and deliveries.

Digital delivery techniques such as 4D planning will be used to plan the construction sequence of structures, including the Moy Rail Bridge and Dalmagarry Bridge.

Balfour Beatty Scotland managing director Hector MacAulay said: “We are pleased to have been appointed to deliver the latest phase of the A9 dualling programme, building on our proven track record of successful major infrastructure delivery.

“The A9 Dualling: Tomatin to Moy project will continue to deliver far-reaching benefits to the Scottish economy, creating hundreds of new jobs and stimulating growth of business communities, especially in the tourism industry, as well as improving road user safety.”

Last month, Balfour Beatty collaborated with National Highways to complete the latest phase of the M25 Junction 10 improvement scheme in England.
