Axpo to build 10MWp solar plant in Glarus Süd

The structure will feature eight to 12 modules on its module tables.

Switzerland-based renewable energy producer Axpo has revealed plans to build a new 10MWp solar plant in Glarus Süd, Switzerland.

This is Axpo’s sixth alpine solar installation. It will supply critical electricity in the region during the colder months.

The new solar facility will be built over an area of roughly 120,000m² in an alpine setting in the Friiteren region, and it is estimated to produce approximately 13GWh of electricity each year, enough to power more than 3,000 houses.

This facility proposed for the canton of Glarus will consist of around 36,000 solar modules and will be built as an innovative structure with eight to 12 modules on module tables.

Upon completion, the required area will be available for pasture purposes.

The new facility follows the commissioning of the company’s 2.2MW alpine solar plant in the same region in August last year.

Axpo Solar Switzerland head Oliver Hugi said: “I am delighted that we are now tackling another project with the municipality of Glarus Süd in addition to our important Limmern pumped storage plant and what is currently the largest alpine solar plant.

“The outstanding cooperation we have enjoyed with the municipality of Glarus Süd underlines the commitment of both parties to promoting a sustainable electricity supply in Switzerland.”

Earlier in September, Axpo, in partnership with energy company EWS, a unit of Axpo, announced plans to build a 9MWp ground-mounted solar plant in the Schwyz canton in the country.
