Auckland Airport in New Zealand has entered into an NZ$800m ($496.73m) contract with Hawkins, a subsidiary of Downer Group, for the construction and delivery of a new domestic jet terminal building.

This development is a component of Auckland Airport's terminal integration programme, marking the next major phase with the commencement of pile foundations.

The building, airfield, integrated baggage systems, and associated facilities form the NZ$2.2bn domestic jet terminal project.

Work on Auckland Airport's terminal integration programme began in 2022, with more than 23% of the infrastructure programme complete.

Auckland Airport CEO Carrie Hurihanganui said: "We’re pleased to announce that we have partnered with Hawkins on the delivery of the domestic jet terminal building - the most significant element in Auckland Airport’s ongoing upgrade.

“It’s investment for the coming decades and beyond, creating essential resilience, greater capacity, improved processing for domestic jet travellers and their baggage, and a greater experience for everyone who travels, visits, and works in our aviation precinct.”

The expansion involves extending the international terminal eastwards to accommodate the new domestic jet terminal building.

The facility will feature a new headhouse and a 240m-long gate pier, providing 44% more processing space for passengers and 26% more airline seat capacity.

Additionally, an extra 10% flexible seat capacity will be available through bus lounge operations.

The terminal will offer travellers a short indoor walk between domestic jet services and international flights.

Construction is scheduled to span five years, with the new terminal expected to open to the public in 2029 following construction completion and operational testing.

Hawkins is tasked with installing approximately 600 steel piles, each 35m deep, as well as laying concrete slabs and timber structural flooring.

The company will also be responsible for the roofing and other materials necessary for the terminal's construction.
