Assemblin has signed a contract to take part in the planning phase for the extension of the final storage facility for low-radioactive waste (SFR) in Forsmark, Sweden.

The contract was awarded by Skanska and is valued at approximately Skr50m ($4.91m).

Skanska, under commission from Swedish nuclear fuel management company SKB, is set to oversee the expansion plan.

The project will be executed collaboratively in two phases.

Assemblin has been engaged to handle the planning and development of phase one of systems documentation.

This includes the electrical, automation/control systems, ventilation, and heating and sanitation systems.

The current storage, with a capacity of roughly 63,000m³, will be expanded by an additional 117,000m³ across various underground spaces.

Planning and preparation for phase one are set to begin shortly and are expected to span two years.

Following this, the project will move into its production phase.

Assemblin Electrical business area manager and president Fredrik Allthin said: “We are very pleased to have been entrusted to participate in this exciting project. Safety and quality are particularly important in this project, with the project having been afforded a high-level security clearance, imposing rigorous demands on employees and solutions alike.

“Assemblin has the experience and expertise necessary and, in close partnership with Skanska and SKB, we look forward to designing stable and sustainable installation solutions at Forsmark.”

In November last year, Assemblin was selected to oversee the multitechnical installation works  of a new research and development facility in Lund, Sweden.

The project is estimated to be worth around Skr85m.
