Netherlands-based semiconductor manufacturer ASM International has announced its plans to build a new North American headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, US.
With this move, ASM intends to meet the increasing demand for research and development in the semiconductor industry.
ASM will invest approximately €300m over five years to design and construct this advanced facility, located on a 20-acre campus.
The new headquarters will measure 250,000ft², which is nearly double ASM's current facility. Its construction is expected to take around three years.
ASM CEO Benjamin Loh said: “ASM’s facility in Arizona has always been a key centre for development of leading technologies that enabled many breakthroughs in the global semiconductor industry.
“The investment in our new facility in Scottsdale will substantially expand our research and development activities, further strengthening Arizona as a hub for top-notch semiconductor innovation.”
The overall investment includes capital expenditures for infrastructure and lab equipment, as well as operating expenses such as the additional research and engineering jobs generated via the project.
The project will see investment in renewable energy, a water recycling facility, and other sustainable features.
The company’s global operations and corporate support activities will be included at the site.
As part of the company’s commitment to improve its reclaimed water system to minimise water usage, it aims to use 80% of the reclaimed water at the facility.
The company plans to employ an additional 500 people in Arizona over the course of six years. It currently has 800 employees in the state.
Scottsdale mayor David D Ortega said: “ASM will be locating over 1,000 high-paying technology jobs in our city and their focus on sustainability ensures they will be a fantastic community partner in the shared goal to preserve our most valuable resources.”
ASM opened its North American headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1976 and was one of the state’s first semiconductor equipment companies.
