ARC (Advanced Research Clusters) Oxford has obtained planning permission to construct a facility for the science, technology, and innovation sector at its city campus in the UK.

The development will involve demolishing seven structures on the campus to make way for the construction process.

The facility, named Ascent, is expected to create approximately 500 jobs and contribute an estimated £38m ($48.38m) to Oxford's economy each year.

The 105,000ft² development, designed by Spratley & Partners, will feature lab-ready spaces, a rooftop lounge, wellness areas, a gym, and end-of-trip facilities.

It aims to house various science and technology companies.

Spratley & Partners director Sam George said: “Ascent is a great opportunity for us to contribute to ARC’s vision for the campus and to address the pressing demand for state-of-the-art life science facilities in Oxford.

“Our design aims to meet current needs and contribute positively to the future of the local economy and community.”

Ascent's design prioritises sustainability, aiming to exceed Oxford's sustainable policies with a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology Excellent rating.

The building is expected to reduce operational carbon emissions by 40% compared to current building regulations and will also seek Fitwel certification.

The landscaping around Ascent, created by MacGregor Smith, has been planned to preserve mature trees.

The site is expected to incorporate sustainable drainage systems and include a new green biodiverse roof designed to adapt to climate change.

ARC Oxford Asset Management director Dan Williams said: “We’re delighted to have secured planning permission for Ascent. This transformational project designed from the ground will provide a new home for businesses of all types including leading science and tech organisations.

“This latest development at ARC Oxford further supports our mission in attracting world-class talent, driving economic growth, and fostering continuous support for the innovation ecosystem in the city.”

Construction is expected to begin later this year.
