Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dh700m ($190.58m) contract to enhance the capacity of Al Khail Road, the city’s key traffic corridor. 

The company that secured the contract for this upgrade has not been named.   

The Al Khail Road Improvement Project aligns with the directives of Dubai Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is being carried out under the supervision of Dubai Executive Council chair Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.  

The initiative is set to expand the road network infrastructure in line with the city’s growth and address urban and demographic demands to ensure smooth traffic flow.  

The project involves building 3,300m of bridges and improving more than 6,820m of roads at seven locations along Al Khail Road. 

The enhancements aim to boost intersections and bridge capacity by approximately 19,600 vehicles per hour, reducing traffic congestion and cutting travel times by 30%. 

RTA Board of Executive Directors chair and director general Mattar Al Tayer said: “Al Khail Road Improvement Project stands out among the strategic projects aimed to enhance the capacity of roads that run parallel to and support Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.” 

Al Tayer further noted that at the Zabeel location, the project will introduce a three-lane bridge of 700m, facilitating the movement of roughly 4,800 vehicles per hour.  

This bridge will connect Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Road directly to Al Khail Road towards Abu Dhabi.  

Additionally, surface road improvements of 850m will improve access to Financial Centre Street from Al Khail Road.
