Canada's Ontario Government has contracted Aecon for the Elevated Guideway of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) project in Toronto.

The $290m contract involves the design and build of a 1.5km elevated guideway situated along the north side of Eglinton Avenue West, extending from a point just east of Jane Street to a location just west of Scarlett Road.

Construction is set to start early next year, with projected completion in 2028.

The guideway is a crucial component of the 9.2km extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT.

The extension will stretch from Mount Dennis in the east to Renforth Drive in the west, providing links to the UP Express and Kitchener GO train services, along with the TTC, GO, and MiWay bus services.

Aecon plans to subcontract certain early works to Aecon Six Nations (A6N), a partnership led by Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (51%) in collaboration with Aecon (49%).

The company will help Metrolinx explore partnerships with Indigenous-owned (Six Nations) businesses as part of the project.

Aecon president and CEO Jean-Louis Servranckx said: “We are pleased to expand our role in delivering this critical transit extension that will improve mobility for surrounding communities and decrease travel times for commuters.

“Building on Aecon's experience executing some of the most complex transit projects in Ontario's history, we look forward to successfully executing this project while supporting our client in working collaboratively with local and Indigenous communities.”

In April 2023, Aecon received a contract from the Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Ministry to carry out the Deerfoot Trail Improvements project in Calgary, Canada.
