The Port of Seattle has chosen engineer AECOM to oversee the evolution of the S Concourse at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in Washington, US.

AECOM will lead design and engineering for the project while collaborating closely with design partner HOK to upgrade and refurbish the facility.

Primarily, work will focus on restructuring and reusing the existing seven-storey, 350,000ft² space to optimise operating efficiency, satisfy code requirements, and improve the overall passenger experience.

AECOM's CEO for West US Matt Crane said: “Our relationship with SEA dates back over two decades and we’re looking forward to building on that legacy, deploying practices and bringing expertise honed from our extensive aviation experience to one of the nation’s most visited airports.

“We are committed to creating a new S Concourse that is an exemplar in airport design, passenger experience, and safety - bolstering its standing as a key transportation hub to the Pacific Northwest.”

The recently vacated Federal Inspection Services and Customers and Border Protection segments within the airport will be redeveloped into duty-free shopping, dining, and retail spaces.

In addition, the concourse level will be reconfigured for more efficient circulation, the penthouse level will be expanded to provide additional lounge space, and the site's structural systems will be upgraded with the addition of new gate pods.

AECOM will also focus on implementing methods to support SEA's energy and sustainability goals, using the 'sustainability design approach' to analyse possible sustainable options that can be adopted during the process.
