YIT has signed a contract with the City of Lappeenranta for the construction of a new indoor sports hall in Finland.

The design-build contract, valued at €14m ($15.57m), will see the developer being responsible for the planning of the site as well.

This facility is poised to become a venue for sports, events, and trade fairs, with a focus on energy efficiency.

Spanning approximately 7,000 gross square metres, the steel-framed building will be clad with thin steel panels.

The hall’s design will adhere to World Athletics certification requirements, making it suitable for international athletics competitions.

It will also feature hydraulically rising and falling track curves.

YIT Business Premises segment Jussi Koskela area manager said: “We are delighted to be involved in the planning and construction of this important project for Lappeenranta, which will support the region’s sports activities and international events.

“At the same time, the project will allow us to use our expertise across organisational boundaries in both infrastructure and business premise construction.

“The chosen contracting model means that the design and construction of the sports hall will go hand in hand, which will improve the efficiency of the construction and the user experience of the hall.”

Following the design phase, construction is set to commence in late 2024 with earth and foundation works.

Framework is anticipated to begin in early 2025 and the building is scheduled for completion in April 2026.

The project will be recorded in YIT’s order book for the third quarter of the year.

This work follows YIT’s contract win in June 2024 for warehouse construction and expansion at Prysmian Group Finland’s submarine cable production site in Kirkkonummi.
