The City of Tampere has appointed YIT as the project management contractor for the Aleksanteri School renovation project in Finland.

The goal- and ceiling-priced cooperative project management contract has a cost estimate of approximately €20m ($21.47m). YIT will also serve as the main constructor.

Aleksanteri School comprises three buildings from different eras, accommodating around 550 students from grades one to six, including preschool groups.

The project entails structural repairs to the buildings and the surrounding yard area.

The site’s technical systems will be upgraded, the interiors will be redesigned to align with contemporary educational needs, and the building’s accessibility will be improved.

Work on the project will begin with a development phase.

This will involve collaborative planning between the client, project management contractor, design team, and users to establish the project’s scope and financial ceiling.

The city’s decision-making bodies will review and approve the implementation plans and financial parameters before moving forward with the implementation phase.

YIT Pirkanmaa area Housing and Business Premises VP Sami Viitanen said: “We are excited to use our extensive expertise in the renovation of the historically valuable Aleksanteri School. We have experience in similar demanding renovation projects, such as the renovation of Tampere City Hall and school projects around the country.

“In addition, we are used to operating in a dense urban structure that requires special expertise. The project starts with a development phase, during which the scope of the repair work is clarified in more detail and the most suitable repair methods are agreed upon. This type of project implementation enables the project to achieve the best result.”

Construction is expected to commence in June next year, with completion anticipated by August 2027.

Last month, YIT announced the incorporation of a new circular economy brick solution in the construction of the circular economy block in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, Finland.
