Work on the first phase of the Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has reportedly attained 20% completion. 

Of the Rs57bn allocated for the first phase, 29.5% has been spent, reported Hindustan Times citing Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) officials.

According to these officials, around 6,000 workers will be employed on site to finish the project on schedule.

NIAL CEO Arun Vir Singh told the news publication: “The 17 km boundary wall around the airport site has been completed and the electricity substation with 11 kVA capacity is ready.

“The work progress is on schedule. Some work on the runway, air traffic control building and terminal building has been completed.”

According to The Times of India, almost 15% of the terminal building along with 8% of the air traffic control (ATC) tower and runway were completed by November.

The greenfield airport, claimed to be the largest in India following completion, will be carried out in four phases. It will feature a 3,900m long runway.

Phase one will serve 12 million passengers annually. The capacity will  expand to 70 million in the fourth phase, stated Hindustan Times.

In June this year, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) awarded TATA Projects the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Jewar airport project.

The same month, Tata Projects appointed Bechtel Engineering and Construction India to support the delivery of NIA, while iCAD Holding was selected as Master System Integrator (MSI) consultant for the project.

YIAPL received the final nod for the project’s masterplan in August last year.

A unit of concessionaire Zurich Airport International, YIAPL has been incorporated as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the development of the airport.

Foundation stone of this project was laid in November last year, with completion deadline set at 2024-end.
