The state government of Western Australia (WA) has announced the start of construction on the A$85.8m ($53m) Armadale Courthouse and Police Complex.

Located on Third Road, the facility is being built to house police and justice staff under one roof.

Of the 14,000m² complex, 5,680m² area will be allocated to the police with room for an additional 150 officers.

The facility will feature five courtrooms, and a shared custody facility consisting of nine cells.

The new complex will house general duties officers, detectives, district intelligence, forensic investigation and family violence units.

The project is expected to create 30 apprentices during the construction phase and employ 260 subcontractors. Construction on the project is scheduled for completion in October 2021.

WA Police Minister Michelle Roberts said: “When it’s complete, the community will only benefit from such a fantastic state-of-the-art facility which will provide improved police response and operational support facilities.”

WA Attorney General John Quigley said: “This new facility will provide the people of Armadale and surrounding communities with an exceptional building with first-class facilities.

“The courthouse will feature state-of-the-art video conferencing and digital recording facilities, five courtrooms, a pre-trial conference room, plus separate and secure facilities for victims of crime.”

In January 2020, the WA government issued a request for proposal seeking bids from potential contractors to construct the Morley-Ellenbrook Line, as part of the METRONET project.

Under a competitive alliance model, the RFP calls for the design, construction, and commissioning of the new rail line, which will be one of the four work packages to develop the Morley-Ellenbrook Line.
