UK-based company Willmott Dixon has secured approval for construction of net-zero carbon school building at Silverwood School’s Rowde campus in North Wiltshire.

The new school will be built with an investment of $38.9m (£29m) and is expected to be open for the 350 SEND pupils by September 2023.

For achieving the net-zero status, the school building will be equipped with biomass boilers and will be feature a wide array of photovoltaic solar panels to generate renewable energy.

Preparatory works at the site are expected to begin in February 2022, and the main construction works are planned in March next year.

For this project, Willmott Dixon will use its EnergySynergy service, and will be designed to deliver ecological enhancements and improved natural grassland to enhance the foraging resource for bats.

In a statement Willmott Dixon said: “The buildings will host a community of small teaching clusters that will provide a range of specialist teaching spaces, therapeutic support, and quiet dining.

“Each cluster will be designed to offer plenty of space to move around while maximising natural daylight and ventilation to create an airy feel. Also planned is a hydrotherapy pool, a new all-weather sports pitch, new playing fields and landscaping.”

The school building will be used by early years, primary, secondary and post-16 students.

Last month, Willmott Dixon was appointed by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the construction of £14.5m project at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital in the UK.
