Property company Wihlborgs Fastigheter has entered into an agreement with Malmö University to build and lease the Amphitrite building, a new educational facility at Universitetsholmen, Sweden.

The eight-storey structure will encompass more than 20,000m², including a large auditorium, study areas, a service centre, and a café on the ground floor.

The upper levels of the building will accommodate workplaces and student unions, as well as university dental care facilities.

This project is set for completion by the end of 2027.

The design, a collaborative effort by Scandinavian architectural companies C.F. Møller Architects and Förstberg Ling, along with urban planning company Softer, was chosen by the university in November 2024.

Their concept includes the preservation of an existing warehouse, reflecting the dock and industrial heritage of the area. The development will also repurpose bricks from the existing structure for its facade.

Malmö University vice-chancellor Mia Rönnmar said: “We are pleased to have progressed this far in the process and eagerly anticipate following the construction and development of our sustainable and creative campus. Amphitrite will be a focal point for students, staff and dental students.”

Wihlborgs CEO Ulrika Hallengren said: “Malmö University is a key catalyst for Malmö and the Öresund region’s development and competitiveness, and we are thrilled to have been entrusted with developing more new environments that promote this.

“The combination of stability, provided through connecting with the location’s history, and flexibility, imparted by the opportunity of adapting to meet new requirements, is in true Malmö spirit. Considerable thought and soul have been invested in this building, and I hope this will be appreciated by students, employees and residents of Malmö.”

Wihlborgs secured the construction assignment for the project after a public procurement process.

The company will purchase the land from the City of Malmö in early 2025 for Skr179m ($17.9m) and lease it to the university, with the basic annual rent for the Amphitrite building set at approximately Skr69m.

Meanwhile, this January, Wihlborgs revealed plans to build a 3,600m² warehouse, production, and office facility for technology company BPC Instruments in Lund, Sweden.

BPC Instruments expects to occupy the facility in mid-2026, under a lease running 15 years.
