Inspired Villages, a developer and operator of integrated retirement communities, and construction contractor Farrans Construction have broken ground on the £45m ($58.42m) first phase of the Widmore Park Village project in Sonning Common, England, UK.

The first phase of the project will deliver 73 tailored homes for individuals aged over 65.

The Widmore Park development, upon completion, will offer 133 sustainable homes for approximately 150 residents over the age of 65.

The community will boast a range of facilities, including a restaurant, café, hairdressers, library, and a comprehensive wellness centre with a swimming pool, steam room, treatment rooms, and a fitness studio.

Notably, several amenities such as the site’s gym and pool will be open to the wider community, fostering integration and accessibility.

The project is set to enhance the local economy by creating more than 100 construction jobs and over 40 operational roles post-completion.

Inspired Villages and Farrans Construction have also initiated various community support activities, further contributing to the local area’s social fabric.

Inspired Villages is on a trajectory to develop 34 communities, equating to 5,100 homes for 8,000 older residents.

Widmore Park Village is expected to emulate the sustainability standards of the UK’s first net-zero retirement community, Millfield Green.

Farrans regional director Glenn Gilmore commented: “We are proud to be delivering this important scheme for Inspired Villages and we recognise how important it is to have well-designed, high-quality retired living developments like Widmore Park which promote activity, community and sustainability in our later years.”

Inspired Villages construction director Shaun Whelan added: “We’re hugely proud of the community we’re creating at Sonning Common and know Widmore Park will join our nine operational villages to become a great asset to the local area, whilst supporting the provision of housing for the region’s over 65s in a sustainable and conscious way.”
