A consortium comprising BAM Infra Nederland and TBI companies Croonwolter&dros and Mobilis has secured a multiyear maintenance contract from Westerscheldetunnel, the entity operating the Westerschelde tunnel and Sluiskil tunnel, for the Sluiskil tunnel in Zeeland, the Netherlands.

The Sluiskil tunnel maintenance contract is effective from May 2025. It spans from 23 May until 13 March 2033.

Under the contract, the consortium will be responsible for routine maintenance and critical end-of-life replacements to ensure the tunnel’s safety and accessibility.

The Sluiskil tunnel, a link between Ghent and Terneuzen, is seen as vital for the regional economy, enhancing access for local businesses and residents.

The winning bid from the BAM/TBI consortium includes sustainable initiatives such as the use of low energy asphalt concrete and material recycling.

This contract marks the continuation of a successful partnership, as BAM and TBI have been managing the Sluiskil tunnel’s maintenance since its inauguration in 2015.

Additionally, the trio of Croonwolter&dros, Mobilis, and BAM has been entrusted with the upkeep of the Westerschelde tunnel since 2013.

The contract details the execution of both preventive and corrective maintenance for the Sluiskil Tunnel Complex and its environs.

The consortium will undertake tasks such as asphalt replacement and renovations to the tunnel’s technical installations and civil structures, ensuring the tunnel remains a reliable conduit for the region’s transportation network.

BAM/TBI consortium project manager Jarno Alting said: “We bring together the knowledge and expertise of BAM and TBI to keep the Sluiskil tunnel safely and sustainably available 24/7 in the coming years.

“In one team, we effectively bring all disciplines together in an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to anticipate this maintenance and renovation task.”
