Webuild Group, in a joint venture (JV) with FCC Canada, has secured a contract for the first phase of the Ontario Line development in Toronto, Canada.  

The contract, valued between €700m ($762.44m) and €1.3bn, has been commissioned by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx. 

The final contract value will be determined following the detailed design phase included in the agreement. 

The 50/50 JV, led by Webuild, will undertake the design and construction of the Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations (PTUS) segment of the Ontario Line. 

The PTUS contract will comprise the designing, constructing, supplying, and operating of 3km of twin tunnels and two underground stations. 

It will also include interface works with the Toronto Transit Commission’s Line 2 subway.

The Ontario Line, a new 15.6km subway line in Toronto, aims to accommodate the city’s anticipated population growth from six million to more than eight million by 2030. 

Stretching from Eglinton Crosstown LRT at Don Mills Road to Exhibition Place, the Ontario Line aims to reduce travel times to under 30 minutes, compared to the current 70 minutes.  

This contract marks Webuild’s third mobility project in Canada. 

Webuild is also part of the Connect 6ix consortium responsible for the Rolling Stock, Systems, Operations and Maintenance package.  

In addition, the company is constructing the Hurontario light rail line spanning 18km with the Mobilinx consortium.
