Webuild has completed the construction of the first segment of the railway doubling between the Catania Bicocca and Catenanuova stations in Sicily, Italy, on behalf of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.

This section is a part of the railway line running between Palermo and Catania.

In April last year, a consortium led by Webuild secured a €1.2bn ($1.28bn) contract to upgrade the high-capacity railway segment.

The overall project, which is now 83% complete, aims to increase the capacity and speed of trains, improving travel times and promoting sustainable mobility.

The 11.5km section between Catania Bicocca and Catenanuova was finished in accordance with an accelerated work plan agreed upon last June.

This plan seeks to bring forward the completion date of the railway doubling from February 2026 to February 2025.

The activation of this segment is the first along the Palermo-Catania-Messina route and will enable the full use of the double track over an approximate distance of 38km.

The completed section features intricate construction, including nine out of the total 17 railway viaducts spanning the entire lot.

Additionally, all level crossings have been removed to enhance the safety of road mobility where the line intersects with roads.

Adjustments to the master plan for the Catania Bicocca and Catenanuova stations have also been made, adding a second track to both stations in line with the accelerated timeline.

Webuild is now set to continue the project by laying double track on two further sections.

These include one between Sferro and Motta Sant’Anastasia, spanning around 16km, and another between Motta Sant’Anastasia and Bicocca, measuring approximately 10.5km.

In total, Webuild is engaged in eight projects in Sicily, including seven railway sections on the Palermo-Catania-Messina high-speed route and a segment of the Ragusana motorway connecting Ragusa to Catania.
