Watkin Jones, a developer and manager of residential for rent homes in the UK, has received approval for its development plan for a new purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme.
The plan, which was approved by Bristol City Council’s Development Committee, involves the establishment of a 484-bed PBSA scheme on Malago Road, Bedminster in Bristol, UK.
Watkin Jones said that the development marks one of the final projects of the Bedminster Green regeneration area.
The company has received approval for this PBSA development plan after two years of engagement and negotiations with Bristol City Council.
The new project, which was formerly an engineering works and foundry, is expected to help in the revival of a disused brownfield site and can contribute to the broader regeneration of the Bedminster Green area.
According to the company, the PBSA scheme will deliver new homes for students and will range from six to ten storeys in height, spanning across three different buildings.

By GlobalDataThe scheme will also provide several additional benefits to the local community, including the creation of a new public space along with carrying out improvements to the highway infrastructure.
Watkin Jones Planning head Ben Wrighton said: “We are very excited to announce planning approval for our second project in one of Bristol’s key regeneration areas and our third active project within the city.
“Our commitment to providing high-quality, and well-managed purpose-built student accommodation will in part address the significant growing demand from the University of Bristol. We look forward to continuing our efforts to meet this growing need alongside the city council and the local communities.”
Watkin Jones’ proposal for the scheme promoted various changes to the PBSA plan, compared to the proposals provided by other developers.
These key changes included decreasing the number of rooms and minimising the overall number and height of buildings across the entire PBSA site.
The PBSA will meet the WiredScore ‘Gold’ as well as Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method ‘Excellent’ standards, the company added.
Furthermore, Watkin Jones is collaborating with management company Fresh to deliver round-the-clock on-site services for students.
