Finland’s technology group Wärtsilä has been awarded two EPC contracts, worth over €190m, for two gas-fired power plants in Latin America.
With a combined generation capacity of 400MW, the two power plants are planned to be operational at the end of 2021.

Additionally, Wärtsilä will operate and maintain the power plants under a 10-year operation & maintenance service agreement (O&M), which is effective once the plants enter service.
The power produced from the power plants, which will feature eleven Wärtsilä 50SG gas engines each, will be fed to the national grid in flexible baseload mode.
Wärtsilä Energy Business Americas vice-president Sushil Purohit said: “The EPC and O&M package highlights Wärtsilä’s capabilities as a one-stop-shop supplier, which creates a highly competitive comprehensive solution for the customer.
“The high efficiency of the Wärtsilä engines with their quick power ramp-ups provide the flexibility and reliability needed in today’s energy market, which is trending increasingly towards renewable energy.”
The Wärtsilä gas engine power plant has the ability to use natural gas, LPG, synthetic fuels and various bio-gas fuels.
The firm said in a statement: “The flexible baseload capabilities of the Wärtsilä solution include outstanding efficiency, even in hot ambient temperatures, while the water consumption is zero.”
Recently, Wärtsilä has secured a contract to deliver engineering and equipment (EEQ) to a 23MW power plant on the island of Bantayan. The order was placed by Isla Norte Energy, which is owned by Gigawatt Power and Vivant Energy.
Located in Cebu in the Visayas Region of the Philippines, the power plant will supply power to the whole island, which is currently undergoing frequent blackouts because of the lack of a reliable power supply.
