The Western Australian (WA) Government is set to open an expression of interest (EOI) on 28 January 2025 for community housing providers to manage new social housing projects in the state.

This initiative is a collaboration between the national Albanese and state WA governments, with a significant investment of A$443m ($276m) aimed at bolstering the region’s community housing sector.

The WA Government is inviting submissions from qualified community housing providers (CHPs) or CHP-led consortiums for 13 build-to-rent (BTR) projects on government-owned land.

Six projects located in Wellard, Woodbridge, White Gum Valley, Rivervale, Ellenbrook, and Redcliffe are set to receive development approval and are scheduled to begin this year.

The collaboration between the two governments is being managed through Housing Australia, an independent national housing agency.

An additional A$10.3m has been allocated for the detailed design stage of seven more projects in Butler, Cannington, Subiaco, Bassendean, Kelmscott, Malaga (Ballajura Station), and Midland as part of the WA Government’s 2024-25 mid-year review.

CHPs benefitting from this scheme will receive 25 years of operational funding support from Housing Australia through quarterly availability payments.

EOIs for this affordable housing initiative will close at 2pm Western Standard Time on 7 March 2025.

WA’s Housing and Homelessness Minister John Carey said: “The Cook Labor [WA] Government is getting on with delivering a record $4.5bn in housing and homelessness measures, and this is complemented by significant investments from the Albanese Government.”

“In December last year, in partnership with the Albanese Government, we announced as part of the 2024-25 Mid-year Review, a further $443m commitment for 21 new social and affordable housing projects.

“We’re not stopping our reforms to bolster housing supply – this remains a key priority for the Cook Labor Government, and we’re calling on the WA community housing sector to own and manage up to 1,000 new affordable and social homes.”

Earlier this month, the WA Government issued a tender request to select a qualified builder for the new ‘Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation’ in Cannington.
