Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) and Virginia Department of General Services (DGS) have broken ground on ABC’s new administrative headquarters in Hanover, Virginia.

The new headquarters will be located near the intersection of Pole Green Road and I-295. Construction on the 40-acre site is expected to be completed next year.

The new ABC headquarters will have 315,000ft² of warehouse capacity and 95,000ft² office building, where nearly 500 of ABC’s workers will be stationed.

The present administrative headquarters and warehouse are being relocated from the City of Richmond to Hanover County.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said: “ABC revenues are important to the state. ABC operates 386 stores and is on track to open one store a month over the coming year to provide excellent service and selection to consumers while generating revenues that support programs that benefit all of us.

“This new facility will give ABC the space it needs to continue to operate as a modern retailer.”

The existing facility of Virginia ABC at 2901 Hermitage Road in Richmond has been operating since 1971. The 292,285ft² warehouse has an average inventory between $51m and $62m in distilled spirits, Virginia wine and non-alcoholic mixers to be distributed to 386 stores across the commonwealth.

Operating at 100% capacity, the warehouse received and ships 22,000 to over 30,000 cases of distilled spirits every day.

Virginia ABC CEO Travis Hill said: “We’re marking the beginning of changing where we work and how we work. This facility is the key to us continuing to grow revenue for the commonwealth.

“We’re thrilled to be calling Hanover County home soon. We plan to be here for decades and will be a partner with the county going forward.”

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Governor Northam, Travis Hill, ABC board of directors chair Maria Everett, vice-chair Beth Hungate-Noland and board member Mark Rubin.
