The Municipality of Venice in Italy has revealed plans for a new 18,500-capacity stadium, set to become a key feature of the city’s sports landscape.

Designed by sport architecture and design practice company Populous, the venue will be a cornerstone of the Bosco dello Sport, a multifunctional 116ha hub aimed at integrating sport, social life, education, and well-being.

In March 2024, Populous and multi-disciplined engineering company Maffeis Engineering secured a design and engineering contract from a consortium, which included building and construction company Costruzioni Bordignon, Fincantieri Infrastrutture, and Ranzato Impianti.

The stadium will be constructed in Tessera as part of a broader sports masterplan.

The design, inspired by the local landscape, will feature curved lines that align with the sports centre and arena nearby.

Its façade is designed to create a “light and airy” structure, offering views above the stadium bowl.

The seating bowl is designed with a semi-continuous section on three sides, providing optimal sightlines for spectators.

VIP hospitality will be located in the West Stand, with dedicated spaces for home fans, including a covered gallery offering views, various dining options and social spaces.

The stadium’s inclusive design ensures accessibility for all, and it will host not only football but also Serie A rugby matches and live events such as concerts.

Collaborating on the project are engineering and design firms Soil Engineering, Seingim, and Gae Engineering.

Municipality of Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said: “I am truly proud and excited to present this project, a symbol of rebirth and an example of a city that wants to achieve. The time has come for us to have one of the most modern and cutting-edge stadiums in the world.”

“This will be an important project not only for our metropolitan area, but for the whole country. It will host football and rugby matches, as well as cultural events and concerts, and together with the new Arena, it will lead to the creation of jobs.

“With the whole area of the Bosco dello Sport, Venice will finally have a new epicentre of sport, social life, inclusion and sustainability. I thank all those who, over the years, have worked to make this dream come true.”
