Scandinavian contractor Veidekke has been selected to construct the new Skram primary school in Måløy, Norway, which the company won through a competition.

The turnkey contract, valued at Nkr191m ($17.17m) excluding VAT, has been commissioned by Kinn Municipality in Vestland county. The contract will be added to Veidekke’s order backlog for the first quarter of the year.

Veidekke Bygg Sogn og Fjordane district manager Ole Petter Henden said: “We are both happy and proud to have won the competition and we appreciate the confidence shown in us.

“Building good schools is one of the most important things we can do, and I am sure that the new Skram school will be a great joy for students, teachers and other users. Kinn Municipality sets clear requirements for climate, environment and energy, which we greatly appreciate.”

The school will be designed to accommodate 250 students from grades one to seven and approximately 30 employees.

The building will adhere to passive house standards, ensuring at least a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the reference level.

This new school will feature a traditional two-parallel classroom division and comprise a total of 5,000m² spread across three floors.

A gymnasium with changing rooms, capable of operating independently outside of school hours and eligible for sports funding, will be located in the basement.

The contract also encompasses the development of outdoor areas.

Demolition of the current school is underway, and the new building will rise on the same central site in Måløy.

Construction is set to commence in mid-2025, with the goal of completing the project in time for the 2027 school year.

Kinn Municipality director Øyvind Bang-Olsen said: “We are very pleased that an important milestone in the project has now been passed. The demolition work has started and is progressing well. We are therefore also pleased that we can soon start building a new and modern school in Måløy.

“The new school will make an important contribution so that the municipality can offer both employees and pupils good facilities with a modern pedagogical learning area.”

Veidekke was recently awarded another turnkey contract by Bane NOR Eiendom, a Norwegian hub developer, to build an environmentally certified city hall in Holmestrand, Norway.
