Veidekke has been awarded a design-and-build contract by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to upgrade two domestic tunnels in Oslo.  

The contract, valued at Nkr2.1bn ($197.29m), excluding VAT, involves the refurbishment of the Hammersborg and Vaterland tunnels on Ring 1.

The Vaterland Tunnel spans 370m while the Hammersborg Tunnel spans 380m. 

Both tunnels, originally constructed in 1989, are said to require maintenance, including the repair of concrete structures and the roadway.  

Additionally, general infrastructure such as lighting, cables, pipes, wires, signage, and more will be replaced.

Veidekke Infrastructure executive vice-president Øivind Larsen said: “This is a project that suits Veidekke very well with extensive groundwork and challenging construction work.  

“We have conducted a successful interaction phase together with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration of almost a year, which gives us a very good basis for the project implementation. We are grateful for their trust and look forward to getting started on the construction work.” 

Construction is expected to commence shortly, with completion anticipated in the mid-2027.  

The contract will be reflected in Veidekke’s order book for the second quarter of this year. 

This project comes just after Veidekke secured a design-and-build contract to convert an office building in central Oslo into approximately 100 student bedsits with common areas.
