The University of Utah in the US has revealed details of the proposed expansion of the Rice-Eccles Stadium with an $80m investment.
The announcement follows an approval granted by the university’s Board of Trustees to a request to pursue bonding.
The proposed expansion is subject to financing approval and is expected to be completed before the beginning of the 2021 football season.
It is expected to be funded through fundraising, sponsorships and revenues generated by the stadium’s new premium seating areas.
University of Utah president Ruth Watkins said: “Our stadium serves as more than a home field for our football team.
“It can be a gathering place on our campus for many other events – connecting thousands of students, alumni, faculty, staff and fans to our institution and to one another.”

By GlobalDataAs part of the expansion, the stadium’s south end zone, which was built in 1982, is expected to be demolished and rebuilt.
The bowl is also expected to be enclosed by linking the east and west concourses on the south end, thereby increasing the stadium’s audience capacity from 45,807 to 51,444.
The expansion will also see the addition of 1,000 chairs or bleacher seats, which will be placed for general purchase in the south end zone.
The project will also involve the installation of premium seating in luxury suites and loge boxes, as well as club, ledge and rooftop seating to improve the fan experience.
The decaying locker and meeting rooms below the existing south end zone stands will be replaced with new locker rooms for the players.
The expansion will also involve the construction of a kitchen, recruiting lounge, field-level club lounge, outdoor patio, and rooms for coaches and officials, as well as athletic training, equipment, press operations and the Utah Marching Band.
