Graham has been selected to provide pre-construction services for the Central Hall building of the National Railway Museum in the UK.

City of York Council’s planning committee has approved the Central Hall plan.

The new building is expected to help the museum realise its potential as the cultural hub of York Central.

Situated between the museum’s Great Hall and Station Hall, Central Hall will serve as a new gallery space.

Besides linking the current museum buildings, Central Hall will serve as a corner stone of Vision 2025 to become the world’s notable railway museum.

Central Hall will have a Railway Futures Gallery displaying the modernisations in rail technology, a café overseeing the new museum square, a shop, event space and new visitor facilities.

National Railway Museum director Judith McNicol said: “We are very pleased the planning committee has approved the Central Hall plans which will have transformative benefits for York and the wider region.”

The Central Hall plan forms a part of early stage of the delivery of York Central project, a 45ha site being redeveloped in partnership with Network Rail, Homes England, City of York Council and the museum.

Work on the museum is expected to begin in early 2023 and complete by 2025.

The new building has been designed by Feilden Fowles, while Montagu Evans has served as the heritage consultant.

Graham strategic projects director Neil McFarlane said: “We are delighted to have been appointed as the preferred bidder for the National Railway Museum’s Central Hall Project. We understand the significance of this project for the Science Museum Group (SMG) and recognise their aspirations for Central Hall to become the gateway to the transformed museum.
