UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has recommitted to constructing one million houses across the country before the next general election, which is expected to be held within the next two years.
The government’s previous housebuilding policy will surpass a significant milestone if this goal were attained. More than 2.2 million new houses have been delivered since 2010.
The statement comes ahead of a speech by Housing and Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove, in which the member of parliament will outline new ways to clear up the planning system and build more houses where local permission is provided.
The government will focus its construction efforts in inner-city regions where demand is the highest and expansion can be controlled.
This pledge also involves the development of a new urban area in Cambridge, which will be built in collaboration with local leaders and communities, and would include amenities such as laboratories and open areas.
Sunak said: “Today, I can confirm that we will meet our manifesto commitment to build one million homes over this parliament. That’s a beautiful new home for a million individual families in every corner of our country.

By GlobalData“We won’t do that by concreting over the countryside – our plan is to build the right homes where there is the most need and where there is local support, in the heart of Britain’s great cities.
“Our reforms today will help make that a reality, by regenerating disused brownfield land, streamlining the planning process and helping homeowners to renovate and extend their houses outwards and upwards.”
The government said it will also make efforts to remove obstacles in the planning system that impede development and halt associated growth and investment.
These measures will include establishing a £24m Planning Skills Delivery Fund immediately to clear delays and a new team of planners and other experts to help unblock major housing developments.
