TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed an agreement to commence the construction of 17-megawatt peak (MWp) solar PV plant to provide power for a desalination plant in Sur, a city of Oman.
The power plant will be located on the site of the Sharqiyah Desalination plant, which supplies drinking water to over 600,000 people of the Sharqiyah region.
Claimed to become the first of its kind to be installed in the region, the solar project will generate annually over 30,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of green power, or over a third of the desalination plant’s daily consumption, thereby allowing it to cut down close to 300,000t of CO2 emissions.
Oman’s National Energy Strategy aims to convert 30% of its power use to renewable sources by the end of this decade.
The plant will be equipped with over 32,000 solar panels and will use an East-West tracker system to boost energy production.
The solar project will cover an area of 130,000m2, which is equivalent to about 18 football pitches.
