US-based Thompson Builders has commenced broken ground on the domestic Safe Stay Community Campus, in Sacramento, California.

The $30m project is designed to support the region’s unhoused population.

Situated along Watt Avenue, the 130,000ft² campus will feature 225 beds in individual cabins and emergency and weather-respite beds for 75 individuals. The property will also have safe parking accommodations for approximately 50 people.

The infrastructure at the campus will include sanitation facilities, laundry areas, and dining spaces to serve three meals a day.

The development will also provide pet care areas and spaces for social and healthcare services, aimed at assisting residents in transitioning towards independent permanent housing.

Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing director Emily Halcon said: “The really great thing about this site in particular, that we don’t have at any other shelters is the sheer size and the ability to really wrap everything people need. So, they’ll come in here and have all their needs of daily living met.”

Earlier this month, Thompson Builders secured a $12.3m tenant improvement project for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District’s communications centre and division office.

The company is tasked with modernising and enhancing emergency response infrastructure at the 7,900ft² facility, which will be transformed into a hub for emergency call monitoring and dispatching.

In January last year, the company completed the San Joaquin Public Health Services Building in the country, featuring 24,500ft² of office space and 5,800ft² of laboratory facilities.
