The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has selected Morgan Sindall Construction’s Cardiff team for the extension of the emergency department (ED) of the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran, near Newport, Wales.

Secured through the SCAPE National Construction Framework, the project is currently underway and expected for phased completion through April 2025.

SCAPE group chief executive Mark Robinson said: “The extension of The Grange University Hospital’s emergency department is a vital project that will not only enhance service facilities but improve patient outcomes.

“In addition, this is an excellent example of how a scheme of this significance and size can incorporate social value to better serve the local community and leave a lasting legacy.”

The project will add a three-storey building with a ground-floor ED triage area while the upper floors will remain open plan to adapt to the hospital’s needs.

The additional amenities will complement the existing structure, with the refurbishment aimed at updating the ED’s waiting and triage rooms.

The project, designed by BDP and managed by Gleeds alongside the NHS (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board), was fast-tracked through an eight-month consultation process under the framework.

Morgan Sindall aims to use its carbon-mapping software, CarboniCa, to track and reduce emissions during construction.

Additionally, the plans include the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on the new and existing hospital buildings.

Morgan Sindall and SCAPE say they aim to deliver social value through the project by offering apprenticeship weeks, work placements, and more.

Morgan Sindall Cardiff team area director Rob Williams said: “The quality of blue-light facilities is of the utmost importance and throughout our delivery, we will work to the highest of standards to deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose emergency department unit.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with the NHS team, and the local community on this, and future works.”

Recently, Morgan Sindall Construction’s Essex branch secured a position on the new Essex Construction Framework, which focuses on improving educational facilities within the region.
