Webuild Group and its American subsidiary and its joint venture partner Lane Construction have announced that they are moving a step closer on starting the construction on a high-speed railway between Dallas and Houston in Texas.

The $20bn railway line is moving ahead after two federal decisions on the project were announced.

Webuild and Lane Construction secured the contract from Texas Central to design and build the railway line in September last year.

The project received the Rule of Particular Applicability (RPA) from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration and the Record of Decision (RoD) after completing the environmental review process.

Considered to be crucial milestones, the two decisions will support in starting the work on the project, with nearly $14bn to be allocated for civil works.

The civil engineering work will include the design and construction of the viaduct embankment sections along the entire route, installing track system and alignment and construction of all the buildings and services to house maintenance and other rail system equipment.

The project is expected to bring $36bn in economic benefits during the next 25 years of its operation, with an immediate impact of more than $10bn.

The project is expected to create up to 17,000 direct jobs in the first six years of construction and more than 20,000 indirect jobs.

Webuild CEO Pietro Salini said: “This latest achievement, with these two decisions, brings us a step closer to the start of construction on the new railway.

“Webuild’s unique track record, especially in high-speed rail, will see us apply our expertise to this project that is important for sustainable mobility.

“As leaders of the design and build work, we are honoured to have been given this unique opportunity to build a high-speed railway in Texas.”

The 379km long railway line is expected to reshape mobility between the two cities. Based on Central Japan Railway’s Tokaido Shinkansen system, the railway line is expected to carry travellers between the two cities within 90 minutes, with a stop at Brazos Valley near the Texas A&M University.

With departures at every 30 minutes during peak hours and every hour during off-peak times, the railway line is could easily reduce the travel time by 90 minutes compared to car travel and one hour of air travel taking into account boarding times.
