Tata Steel has selected construction company Skanska to provide civil and structural design and project management services for its electric arc furnace (EAF) project at Port Talbot, UK.

The contract will be spearheaded by Skanska’s technology team based in Bridgend, South Wales.

The technology division will be responsible for delivering the civil and structural design of key components of the scheme, including the foundations and structures for the new EAF.

This team will also oversee the design of site infrastructure and drainage systems.

Furthermore, a technical team from Skanska will collaborate with Tata Steel at Port Talbot to offer project management services.

Skanska UK engineering and design director Susan Ryall said: “We have been working closely with Tata Steel for the past four years, developing the design and project management solution for this complex scheme.

“We are delighted to have been appointed and be playing our part in delivering this new electric arc furnace, helping to safeguard jobs across the UK, improve the environment and create new opportunities in the region.”

The new EAF will replace the site’s decommissioned iron and steelmaking facilities, with an annual production capacity of three million tonnes of steel, the company said.

Set to commence operations by the end of 2027, the new furnace is expected to lower the site’s carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by up to 90% – an estimated reduction of five million tonnes of CO₂ annually, the company added.

Tata Steel UK EAF project lead Peter Jones added: “This £1.25bn [$1.55bn] investment in low-CO₂ steelmaking is the biggest commitment the UK steel industry has seen in generations.

“It is critical that it is delivered on specification, on time and on budget, so it is important for us to choose the very best industrial partners with a strong reputation for delivery.”

Earlier this year, Tata Steel appointed Sir Robert McAlpine as the principal contractor to support its £1.25bn investment in low-carbon steelmaking at the Port Talbot steelworks.
