The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore has awarded the S$356m ($264.2m) civil contract to a joint venture (JV) between Taisei and the Singapore branch of China State Construction Engineering for the first phase of the Cross Island Line.

The scope of work under the contract involves design and construction of a 3.2km-long bored tunnel between Aviation Park station and Loyang station for the Cross Island Line Phase-1 (CRL1).

More than 50km long, CRL is Singapore’s eighth MRT line and is also claimed to be the longest fully underground line.

It will serve the existing and future developments in the eastern, western, and north-eastern corridors connecting major hubs including Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.

The 29km long CRL1 comprises 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill and will serve residential and industrial areas including Loyang, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Defu, Hougang, Serangoon North and Ang Mo Kio.

Construction on the bored tunnel is expected to commence in the second quarter of this year.

LTA has planned to use a large-diameter tunnel boring machine to construct a single tunnel with two tracks in it.

Once operational in 2030, CRL1 is expected to benefit more than 100,000 households, while common recreational spaces such as Changi Beach Park and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park will also be more accessible by public transport.

Japanese construction company, Taisei is now involved in the construction of Marina Bay station and tunnels for the Thomson-East Coast Line.

At present, Singapore branch of China State Construction Engineering is constructing the Keppel and Cantonment stations for Circle Line 6, along with the tunnels for North East Line Extension.
