ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has commenced works on a new data centre facility, STT Johor 1, within the STT Johor data centre campus in Malaysia.
Chief minister of Johor YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi officiated the ground-breaking ceremony at the site in Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park, Iskandar Puteri.
The data centre is expected to be fully operational by the end of next year.
Spanning more than 22 acres, the overarching STT Johor data centre campus is claimed to have the potential to provide up to 120MW of IT load once fully operational.
STT Johor 1, the first facility on this campus, is designed with an IT load capacity of 16MW.
The location of the campus will ensure seamless connectivity, including integration with STT Singapore 5, STT GDC’s regional interconnection hub.
STT Johor 1 is poised to support the increasing demand for cloud services and high-performance computing from its inception.
The facility will cater to advanced computational workloads for enterprises, government agencies, and cloud service providers, facilitating ‘cutting-edge’ research and data-driven decision-making processes across various industries.
STT GDC plans to power the STT Johor campus with renewable and low-carbon energy sources, with discussions underway with renewable energy providers such as Ditrolic Energy to supply clean electricity for STT Johor 1’s operations.
STT GDC Malaysia county head Darryll Sinnappa said: “The STT Johor data centre campus marks a significant milestone for STT GDC in our efforts to deliver advanced digital infrastructure that can play a role in contributing to Malaysia’s ambitions to grow their digital economy leadership in the region.”
In November 2023, STT GDC and Basis Bay established a joint venture to construct and operate data centres in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya in Malaysia.
