STRABAG, a German transport infrastructure company, is constructing a new value stream management (WSM) site for resource-conserving construction in the port of Neuss, Germany.

The project, spearheaded by STRABAG North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasises the systematic recycling of mineral-based building materials such as soil and construction waste mixtures in the region.

The site, strategically located with trimodal connections of port, road, and rail, will provide logistical advantages for the regional construction projects.

STRABAG North Rhine-Westphalia commercial director Georg Lehde said: “The trimodal connection relieves the local road network and thus significantly reduces CO₂ [carbon dioxide] emissions, which is an invaluable advantage, especially in a region with intensive construction activity such as North Rhine-Westphalia.”

The company’s own shipping access via the Rhine enhances material handling capabilities.

Approval for the project was granted in September 2024, and construction commenced at the beginning of 2025. The opening of the WSM site is scheduled for mid-2025.

STRABAG claims to be focusing on sustainable practices during construction, aiming for certification by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

The use of low-temperature asphalt in the construction of the WSM site is one of the sustainable measures adopted by STRABAG.

The company also plans to operate with a focus on resource conservation and CO₂ savings, including the use of electric and hydrotreated vegetable oil-powered machinery.

An energy management system will be implemented to monitor and optimise energy usage continually at the site.

Once operational, the WSM site will annually process up to 250,000 tonnes (t) of materials. These materials will be screened and separated into two streams, soil and construction waste.

The soil will be utilised for backfilling while the construction waste will be crushed and, following chemical analysis, repurposed as high-quality recycled material for uses such as road substructures.

The initiative by STRABAG aims to advance sustainable construction and support a circular economy in a region experiencing urban growth.
