The Luegbrücke, a vital bridge on the Brenner motorway in Tyrol, Western Austria, is set to undergo a significant reconstruction by a consortium of European construction companies, comprising PORR and STRABAG.

The project, with a contract volume of €217m ($223.3m), has been awarded by ASFINAG, Austria’s state-owned mobility body. The project is set to begin next month and last until December 2030.

ASFINAG managing director Hartwig Hufnagl said: “Our award process was based on the best bidder principle and resulted in two absolutely proven partners in infrastructure construction who also have a strong regional connection. The construction costs of the new Luegbrücke are therefore also sustainable investments in Tyrol as a business location and living space.

“We bear great responsibility for safety and modern infrastructure, which is why our goal is clear: We want to start construction in spring 2025 and end the traffic restrictions at the end of 2027 with the completion of the first new bridge.”

At 1.8km in length and approximately 15.5m in width, the Luegbrücke is the ‘longest’ bridge on the A13 Brenner motorway and is claimed to be a key route for an average of 32,000 vehicles each day.

Now, after more than 55 years of service, the bridge is due for a complete replacement due to the end of its service life.

The project development with see the consortium constructing a composite slab-girder bridge to replace the existing suspension bridge.

The reconstruction will be carried out in stages, employing LEAN Construction techniques to ensure efficiency.

The first step involves a new support structure being built alongside the existing bridge by the end of 2027. This new structure will initially act as the Innsbruck carriageway, allowing traffic to be diverted while the old bridge is demolished.

Following the demolition, the second steel-composite support structure will be built, which will serve as the Brenner carriageway.

The completion of these two separate structures will facilitate improved safety and traffic flow. The project also includes the construction of four new water protection systems.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “It’s essential that bridges are kept shipshape and replaced at the end of their service life with state-of-the-art structures. Building the new Luegbrücke is a highly complex and challenging project with a very tight construction schedule.

“The extreme hillside location presents unparalleled logistical challenges for both the new construction and demolition, and the dimensions of the partial structure over the Sillschlucht gorge are also without peer in Austria.”

Last May, STRABAG and PORR signed a purchase agreement for parts of the VAMED group for €90m, with the transaction to be executed through a joint holding company, where both companies will hold an equal 50% stake.
