Design and engineering company Stantec has been selected for the second phase of the City of San Diego’s Pure Water programme in the US.

Through this initiative, the city aims to supply up to half of the city’s drinking water via potable reuse and to reduce ocean discharges.

The Pure Water San Diego programme is expected to transform recycled water into a safe drinking water source through advanced treatment processes.

Stantec and its partners have been involved with the scheme since its inception in 2015.

Phase one of the programme, which began following city council approval in 2014, is currently under construction in the northern part of San Diego.

Stantec is providing programme management services for this phase, which is expected to start producing water by 2026.

For the second phase, Stantec’s role also includes providing programme management, as well as planning, regulatory compliance, technical engineering, operational readiness planning, and construction support services.

The latest development will encompass a series of new projects, including the construction of an advanced water treatment facility, a water reclamation plant, pump stations, and pipelines.

Stantec Water executive vice-president and business operating unit leader Ryan Roberts said: “This is a significant opportunity for our team to continue its partnership with the City of San Diego on this groundbreaking programme.

“We’ve enjoyed a productive and collegial relationship over the last nine years to address the water needs of San Diego. We’re pleased to bring our large-scale programme delivery and technical expertise to the next phase of this project.”

This month, Stantec was also appointed as the primary designer for a forensic psychiatric facility at the Southeast Psychiatric Treatment Center, located at Norristown State Hospital in the US.
