Island Health has selected design and engineering company Stantec as the prime consultant for three new long-term care (LTC) homes on Vancouver Island.
The LTC is being developed to enhance care for older residents in the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC).
Stantec will oversee the architecture, engineering, and sustainable design services for the development of these LTC homes, expected to provide more than 750 LTC beds across three sites in Colwood, Nanaimo/Lantzville, and Campbell River.
These facilities form part of BC’s C$2bn ($1.47bn) investment in care for its older population, which includes enhancements in home health, primary care, and assisted living services.
Each LTC home will feature a design that is both consistent in its functional elements and tailored to the specific conditions and communities of its location, Stantec stated.
The designs will focus on creating a homelike, person-centred care environment that is safe and fully accessible.

By GlobalDataIn the design process, Stantec is collaborating with local First Nations residents and other stakeholders to ensure that the new facilities meet the needs of the communities they will serve.
Aside from the 765 beds, the LTC homes will provide childcare spaces, hospice units, as well as special population units for younger adults requiring LTC.
Some of the additional services such as adult day programmes will cater to individuals with various health challenges, including those related to mental health and substance use.
Residents will also have access to a range of amenities designed to support independence, including hairdressing salons, therapy services, activity spaces, and bistros.
