SSAB, a Nordic and US-based steel company, has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Norwegian stockist and distributor Smith Stål for future deliveries of fossil-free steel.

Smith Stål offers a stock of steels and metals, including plates, beams, and bars.

This collaboration aims to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions associated with traditional steel production and create a fossil-free value chain.

Smith Stål director Eirik Berg said: “It is a great pleasure for our company that we in the future can deliver SSAB’s fossil-free steel to our customers in Norway. Being top three among Norwegian steel distributors, we feel a great demand on us when delivering to industry, building and offshore segment.”

SSAB has developed two steel products, SSAB Zero and SSAB fossil-free steel, which feature virtually zero-fossil carbon emissions.

SSAB Zero, which has been commercially available since 2023, is produced from recycled steel using fossil-free electricity and biogas.

On the other hand, SSAB Fossil-free steel uses HYBRIT technology, co-developed with LKAB and Vattenfall, to replace coal with hydrogen in the steelmaking process, resulting in water rather than CO₂ emissions.

While SSAB Fossil-free steel is currently offered for pilot deliveries, SSAB Zero is already on the market.

SSAB Sweden and Norway Sales head Matts Nilsson said: “I am happy to welcome Smith Stål as a fossil-free steel partner, adding another distribution partner to our very important Norwegian market.

“Together we are building a strong value chain for our Norwegian customers.”

In May this year, SSAB Group’s subsidiary Ruukki Construction introduced Ruukki LowCarbon.

This product range is designed to help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings and meet the increasing environmental regulations and customer demand for lower life cycle emissions.
