US-based Spirit Airlines has broken ground on its new $250m corporate headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

When completed in 2022, the 500,000ft² spaced headquarters will house 1,000 of its employees, who will be moved from its current facilities in Miramar to the new Dania Pointe site. It also plans to add another 225 jobs during the next five years.

The new headquarters will be located in the Dania Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) District, which has also supported the project.

Spirit Airlines president and CEO Ted Christie said: “Spirit has called South Florida home for more than 20 years. This new investment will keep us connected to the community while improving our team’s efficiency and ability to support what is an ever-expanding international operation.

“We look forward to partnering with our community, creating more jobs and driving future economic development as South Florida’s Hometown Airline.”

The new headquarters will include corporate offices, a new crew training facility with flight simulators and a corporate training residence. All the facilities are claimed to have been designed to streamline workflow and to offer quick access to the airport.

The company recently acquired land from Kimco Realty, the owner and the principal developer of Dania Pointe, to secure the land for the project. Gensler has been selected as the architectural firm and Jones Lang LaSalle will act as the project advisor.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said: “Spirit Airlines is a major job creator for our state, and we are excited that they have chosen to expand their Florida footprint with this new corporate campus.

“Today’s groundbreaking is just another indication that Florida remains the best state in the nation to start or grow a business.”

In October 2019, Spirit Airlines submitted the site plans to the City of Dania Beach to build the campus in Dania Pointe, a mixed-use development which has nearly one million square feet of retail space, restaurants and housing.

The new headquarters is expected to pave the way for future growth of the company while improving its operational efficiency.
