Europe’s first underwater restaurant Under has opened for service in Lindesnes, Norway.
Under has been designed by international architecture and design firm Snøhetta.

The 34m-long monolithic form of the building is half sunken and rests directly on the seabed 5m below. It resembles a sunken periscope and gives a panoramic view of marine life.
The building has a rough concrete shell that acts as an artificial reef, creating a fertile environment for limpets and kelps. The thick concrete walls built against the shoreline can endure pressure and shock from the rugged conditions.
Large windows are featured at the restaurant to offer a view of the seabed.
Up to 40 guests can be seated at the restaurant, which provides a fine dining experience with a focus on high-quality, locally sourced produce and sustainable wildlife capture.

Snøhetta founder and architect Kjetil Trædal Thorsen said: “As a new landmark for southern Norway, Under proposes unexpected combinations of pronouns and prepositions, and challenges what determines a person’s physical placement in their environment.
“In this building, you may find yourself underwater, over the seabed, between land and sea. This will offer you new perspectives and ways of seeing the world, both beyond and beneath the waterline.”
The underwater restaurant will also function as a marine research centre.
