Construction company Skanska has been contracted for the renovation of Clayton University Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, US.

The extensive renovation and reconfiguration project aims to improve the student experience and re-establish the university as a community hub.

The estimated value of the contract, signed with Lehigh University, is Skr730m and will be registered into Skanska’s order bookings for the third quarter of this year.

The 9,200m² remodelling of the building is expected to deliver utility upgrades and new mechanical and electrical systems, in addition to the construction of a comprehensive fire prevention system.

This project will also redevelop the gathering spaces, offices, conference rooms, and lounge areas within the university. Slate and copper roofing systems at the site will be replaced.

The building’s historical elements such as its internal stone walls and distinctive window designs, including stained glass windows, will be preserved as part of the project.

Bob Mohr will serve as the lead designer architect for the development. The university is partnering with Skanska USA to engage minority, women, and disadvantaged business enterprises.

The project is set for completion in December next year. Once complete, the university is expected to receive LEED certification.

The Clayton University Center was originally built in 1868 by university founder Asa Packer and was expanded and remodelled in 1956.

Earlier this month, Skanska received a contract from the Oregon Health & Science University to enact its hospital expansion project in Portland, Oregon, US.
