Sir Robert McAlpine has been selected as the main works contractor by Tata Steel to support its £1.25bn ($1.55bn) investment in low-carbon steelmaking at the Port Talbot steelworks in the UK.

The company will oversee the civil, structural, and building works for the new electric arc furnace (EAF)-based steel production facility, designed to produce approximately three million tonnes of steel annually.

This project is seen as a pivotal step in securing a greener future for domestic steelmaking and aligns with Tata Steel UK’s environmental goals.

The construction of the new facility will include the aforementioned EAF, ladle furnaces, and associated works, all integrated within the existing basic oxygen steelmaking plant and its surrounding areas.

The project is scheduled to be completed over a three-year period, with preliminary works set to begin in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.

The main works, meanwhile, are planned to commence in Q3 2025, pending planning approval.
