Shimmick Construction has successfully implemented Planera, a visual critical path method (CPM) scheduling and planning solution.
This move has reportedly resulted in a 100% boost in scheduling efficiency and halved the company’s scheduling time.
The deployment of Planera and its ‘what-if’ analysis functionality has enabled Shimmick to efficiently create a prebid schedule for the Central San Solid Waste handling facility upgrade.
The project’s complexity is said to have required a schedule that would allow for uninterrupted plant operations and accommodate partial shutdowns.
The schedule included structural, electrical, mechanical, controls, and commissioning elements, all while aligning with the operating plant’s ongoing requirements.
This detailed planning and collaboration facilitated by Planera allowed Shimmick to identify potential challenges and share insights with the project owner before bidding.

By GlobalDataShimmick NW Estimating head Trace Porter said: “The platform’s impact is not just to improve efficiency, but a game-changer in creating bids and winning contracts.
“Our business relies on accurate estimates and comprehensive planning for all sorts of contingencies, and utilising Planera during estimation planning allows us to deliver on those goals by improving our speed, accuracy and interteam collaboration.”
Shimmick notes that it faced hurdles with legacy scheduling systems, which were marked by collaboration bottlenecks, limited flexibility, and inefficient input mechanisms.
The company turned to Planera to streamline its project scheduling process.
This deployment comes after Planera announced an integration with Autodesk Construction Cloud last month.
